Robin Chavez Photography {Featured Photographer}

Hey everyone- Dani here. I recently had the opportunity to interview and get to know Robin Chavez from Robin Chavez Photography. She has a unique, no rules style, is amazingly humble and quite frankly she's a knock out.

Here is her interview...

Robin-I am a mom of three boys, with a supportive husband, two dogs, a rabbit and a frog. I am the photographer behind Robin Chavez Photography. I love photography because it allows me to scratch that creative itch that I have. I got started in photography after I had looked into family pictures when my youngest was just a babe. I had compared the price to a used Canon Rebel on Craigslist. They were the exact same price. I decided to take the risk and go for the camera. I knew nothing about my camera or how to operate it, so it was kind of the beginning of an adventure for me. I still remember how excited I was to hold my "new" camera in my hands though. It just felt right.

E4P-What is the best advice you could give to someone just starting out?

Robin-The best advice I could give, is that if you want something, then go after it and make it happen. A challenge is a challenge. It has its difficult moments, but the rewarding ones make it worth it.

E4P-What is the worst advice you have been given?

Robin-When I started out I had a few people snuff at my trying, but I didn't let that affect me. I carried only the positive comments with me. I didn't ever receive any negative advice necessarily, but I did have people believe photography was just going to be something else that was only a "phase" for me. I only let that drive me more though.

E4P-Where do you find your inspiration?

Robin-I find inspiration from my subjects. I like to learn about them and who they are to be able to photograph them in a way that expresses who they are. For children, that sometimes means escaping into the world in which they see it. That often means a very creative edit.

E4P-Are you a Nikon or Canon lover? Robin-I use Canon, but I've honestly never tried out a Nikon, so I'm not one to compare the two. Canon is what I know though and learned on and it's never steered me wrong.

I shoot with a Canon 5D Mark ii and the 24-105 L lens and the 50mm 1.4. I use my zoom lens a LOT.

E4P-If you could shoot anywhere in the world where would it be and what be your subject?

Robin-If I could shoot anywhere in the world it would have to be Ireland, Spain, or South Africa. I've wanted to travel to both places since I was little. Someday I'll make it happen. If I could shoot any person in the world, it would probably not be your typical celebrity child. I would prefer to shoot the child that's homeless, or sick in the hospital, or starving for their next meal. The child that has overcome something that they never should have faced. For me, photography is about telling a story- their story, as well as their dreams. I want to capture things some day that really mean something and will make a difference. That's my goal anyway.

E4P-Do you tend to stick to a certain style of photography? Robin-I am all over the place when it comes to style. I am still in learning mode, so I think it's essential to try everything out to learn what I prefer. I have learned that I don't love a posed newborn look and so I stick to lifestyle sessions only for newborns. I have also learned thus far that I prefer lifestyle or dreamy creative edits for children.

E4P-Where do most of your clients come from? Robin-I don't advertise and am only on Facebook and my little blog, so my clients mostly come to me through word of mouth. Almost all of my clients are return clients and have become friends as well. Being a photographer is such an honor and a reward. I get to be a part of weddings and witness such beautiful love. I get to be a part of birthday parties and adoptions and watching children change and grow. I feel very blessed for it all.

E4P-Is there anything new happening in the next year? Robin-I am looking forward to continuing my growth as a photographer. I have my eye set on a couple of new lenses and am looking forward to creating a new web page as well. I'll also be attending my first workshop next summer.

Well there you have it. It was a pleasure getting to know you Robin. Now E4P fans head over to her Facebook page and show her some love, you are bound to find all sorts of inspiration there!

~Dani
